delays. i'll have details in just a few minutes. >> thank you. good morning, everyone. it's monday, a super monday here in the bay area, january 28th. good to have you with us. i'm frank mallicoat. >> i'm michelle griego live just across from jackson square. jackson square is kind of a mecca for artists to come out and do their oil paintings. we have also seen some clowns late last night who were doing balloons for the kids walking around the streets. i have to tell you, new orleans knows how to put on a good party. and not only are they putting on a party for everyone coming out for super bowl xlvii, but they're putting -- they are right in the middle of mardi gras season so they are out there along the parade route as the floats go by. there's beads flying from everywhere, flying from the floats from the balconies in the french quarter.

new orleans nearly 300 years old. there is history here. we have been talking to people about what they expect from everyone coming into town. of course, the city is going to bring in money with all of these out-of-towners but if you think the super bowl is a big party with 150 to 200,000 people coming into the city, mardi gras, they expect way more than that for mardi gras. and, of course, as i told you, it's in the middle of mardi gras season and they know how to party out here. >> it's like two perfect worlds colliding. ravens, 49ers fans and mardi gras-goers. thank you, michelle griego live in new orleans. before the 9ers landed in the big easy they got a ceremonial sendoff in the south bay. the team boarded a delta charter in san jose yesterday for what could be the ride of their lives. if they win that game. as the plane taxied the runway a couple of fire trucks bid farewell with a two hose

salute. dozens of fans showed up to show their support outside the 49er training facility in santa clara. decked out in 9er gear fans waited to catch a glimpse of the players as they drove by. colin kaepernick had fun. coach jim harbaugh keeping a lower profile. the coach all business right now. fans didn't seem to mind. they just wanted to wish their teams the best of luck. >> doing what you're doing, you got great fans cheering you on. >> good luck and play hard. don't give up on yourself. >> those fans did their best to show their love as the buses finally rolled by beginning a journey hopefully to a big super bowl winner on sunday. 9ers did hold a press conference upon arriving in new orleans. here's some sound. >> did you think that the offensive college was going to work in the nfl? >> i thought it would work to

some extent. i didn't think it was something you could run every play. there's too many good athletes on defense at this level. >> colin work the beanie there. kaepernick taking questions from the reporters. he is coming off the plane right there. team very focused. we'll hear from coach harbaugh coming up. michelle has been out in the big easy, you landed saturday night. you have been eating all this great food. you have been collecting beads having a good time. >> frank, it's called research. come on. i'm a reporter. this is reporter involvement. i'm supposed to be out here eating. [ laughter ] >> good luck with that research come friday. >> it's been great so far. people in new orleans have been welcoming. they are welcoming all of the

outer towners with open arms, feeding us, telling us about the culture of the city. we were walking around the french quarter, bourbon street, beads flying, music everywhere, live music, musicians on every corner. so the team will have a lot to do. they need to stay focused on super bowl xlvii even in new orleans. 150 to 200,000 people are expected to be here for the super bowl. and it's supposed to rake in new orleans about $400 million possibly more with everyone spending money at the restaurants, hotels and bars. another city is raking in cash because of the super bowl and that's our very own san francisco. and cbs 5 reporter elissa harrington has more on that. >> reporter: good morning. well, of course we want the

49ers to win. people who work and live in san francisco could profit. economists predict $120 extra a year in personal income. there are a few reasons for this. first of all, winning brings confidence and pumped up fans are big spenders. also, the city has been put on a national stage. we are getting exposure and press and that also brings confidence and finally fans are expected to spend $11 billion on super bowl related purchases including 8 million pounds of tortilla chips for super bowl parties, 1.25 billion chicken wings, 51 million cases of beer and countless t-shirts, jerseys and other clothing. >> in general, san francisco should be a little bit more active, lively exuberant optimistic place and all those things are good for consumer spending. >> reporter: winning the super bowl could improve the city's image.

it could bring in more fans spending more money. the host city makes big bucks. new orleans will rake in $435 million by the super bowl sunday. live in san francisco, elissa harrington, cbs 5. that's a lot of money. all right, elissa. of course, super bowl xlvii is trending big time on social media outlets. i have been on facebook this morning, as well. with more on that is our very own cate caugiran in the newsroom. good morning, cate. >> reporter: good morning, michelle. yes. super bowl is definitely trending on facebook. a lot of things that people are talking about right now is trying to make super bowl monday an unofficial holiday and there is a petition out there to change that. that petition points out about 111 million americans watched last year's super bowl. and it says by making super bowl monday a holiday, the streets will be safer on sunday night and more people will be productive on tuesday. of course, people we spoke to

seem to agree. >> it's all about beyonce. so yes, new orleans, houston, beyonce, i think we should have a three-day festival. >> i believe it should be a national holiday because most people like myself and the working class of america have to work. and i feel like that we should have the day off so we can celebrate our fellow san franciscans, whoo, 49ers! >> reporter: don't count on taking next monday off. the petition has around 2600 signatures. and michelle that's all short of the 100,000 needed for the white house to even look at it but hey, michelle, i grew up in japan. that means super bowl monday was always super bowl regardless just because of the fact that we were a day ahead. so i always had super bowl monday. reporting live in the newsroom, cate caugiran, cbs 5. >> reporter: that would be a great time to take off especially if the 9ers win, lawrence. then we could get two days off. >> that would be nice to stretch it off.

i think there will be a lot of sick calls that day regardless of the game. you know what? we have some changes coming our way and i think you're going to like them as we'll see much- needed sunshine and warmer temperatures outside. right now cool. hi-def doppler tracking rain, not much yet. in fact clouds continuing to pass across our skies as a weak system sliding on through. but after this we're pretty much done with that. temperatures not as cold this morning. seeing breezy conditions at the coastline and 30s and 40s. by the afternoon, a lot of sunshine out there maybe just a couple of passing clouds. highs in the 50s and low 60s. a little cool and brisk at the coastline but much warmer weather to come we'll talk more about that in a moment. let's check the roads with liza battalones. >> better news now, lawrence, for mass transit. amtrak just gave us a call and they have restored service on the capitol corridor line. but you're looking at least 30 minutes, 30 to 90-minute delays on the capitol corridor line

because of earlier problems. again, trains are running between sacramento and davis. we'll go back outside check out the bay bridge commute where it is starting to look like a monday. you can see a backup on the outside lanes from about the 880 overcrossing. if you have fastrak, you're just rolling through with just a minor backup as you need to slow down as you head through the tollbooth. we'll check the rest of the commute 101 approaching mckee. no big problems for all of san jose. that is moving well in both directions of 101. and the san mateo bridge westbound traffic looking good approaching the toll plaza. it's more crowded now but no big delays at the pay gates on the right. traffic still doing okay across the bridge know foster city. keep in mind there is a water main break which has shut down the intersection of cal aroga outside southland mall. frank. >> thank you. this just in. three people now under arrest this morning all in connection with a deadly nightclub fire in brazil over the weekend. the fire broke out early yesterday morning in the

southern city of santa maria. 231 people many of them college students were killed. the owner of the club is under arrest along with a miami of the band that was performing and its security chief. police inspectors say a musician on stage lit up a flare some sort of firework which ignited the building. security guards kept patrons from leaving because they thought they were trying to leave without paying their bills. firefighters couldn't get in because dead people were blocking the exits. 6:11. the excitement is building. michelle griego is in the big easy this morning. good morning, michelle. >> and we're -- good morning. we're taking in all the sights and sounds of new orleans learning a lot from people about the culture and history of their city and also the proper way to say their city's name. that's coming up.

i think we just did. i had to. you can't say frisco in the bay area. >> thanks for representing the bay area, michelle. >> correcting them on that one. good morning. we are going to talk about the commute. if you are heading for amtrak, there are delays major delays this morning. at one point, service was stopped between sacramento and davis. they have resumed service on amtrak but expect 30 to 90- minute delays on the capitol corridor train. as we show you a map of problems in the hayward area, we have a water main break and traffic control in the area just outside of southland mall so they have the intersection of calaroga and kay closed. also delays approaching the bay bridge toll plaza. the 880 backup, 10 minutes leaving oakland into san francisco. the metering lights are on. the rest of the commute looking fine. san mateo bridge westbound traffic rolling well between the hayward area and foster

city. and if you are heading for the dublin interchange, we haven't had any big accidents for 580 between the altamont pass and the dublin interchange. so it's still looking good. no big problems for the tri- valley. that's a look at your drive into work. here's my old friend larry with a look at the forecast. >> liza with all those notes i thought there would be more going on. >> i just blew right through it. i'm not as good as elizabeth at memorizing. >> very good job. >> thank you very much. [ laughter ] a few clouds out there right now, i think we're looking good as we sail in toward the next few days as high pressure just beginning to build in. today kind of a transitional day. so still breezy out at the coastline with the clouds not quite as cold and then it looks like this afternoon, sunshine and a mix of sun and clouds and milder days are ahead. low pressure now kicking eastward. that ridge of high pressure starting to really build into the bay area today. it will start to settle in nicely. and we'll see some seasonal temperatures and then some warmer weather as we head in

toward the middle of the week. if you plan to travel around the state still maybe some showers toward eureka, should be dry though in the central valley with 50s there. high country looking good a few clouds but 31 degrees in lake tahoe. around the bay area today, 57 degrees in san jose. about 56 a little breezy into half moon bay this afternoon. 55 in pacifica. east bay temperatures into the 50s. maybe some low 60s into the napa valley. and then inside the bay looking at some 50s and 60s. so over looking the next cup days, the ridge will build in nicely. wednesday and thursday well into the 60s outside. a little spring-like weather coming our way. and then next weekend the clouds roll back in and temperatures cool down. but the next few days looking nice. >> but you always kind of rain on the weekend. >> isn't that the way it's working out lately? >> we'll take it. love the sunshine. it is 6:21. no more free rides for drivers parking in san francisco on the weekends. meter enforcement is in effect

new orleans this morning. good morning, michelle. >> reporter: good morning. we are having a great time in new orleans taking in all the sights and sounds. we have been talking about food all morning but let's talk about music. we are walking around the french quarter for the last two nights and there's this music coming out of every little cafe, there's jazz everywhere. we ran and talked to some musicians to kind of traveled the country and have settled here in new orleans. they love it. there's history and culture. they are some of the nicest people i have ever met. they are so inviting so welcoming to us. one flagged our producer wilson walker into his house and then made lunch for him. people here are amazing. >> i guess so. boy, you guys are getting the red carpet treatment. how about the fans? i guess they haven't arrived

i think mike, you're in new mexico, right? >> greetings from gallop, new mexico. it's 37 lovely degrees on the frontage road. no traffic that i'm looking at out of my hotel. how long did it take you to drive back there, michelle? >> to drive to where? [ laughter ] >> from the airport? >> you flew. they told me everybody was driving. they made me drive. >> i talked my wife into thinking it's a second honeymoon. so we left on friday and we don't have a big budget so the first night we stayed in a teepee in san bernardino. the wigwam motel. one of those chic places on route 66. it was very nice actually. we had a terrific time in the teepee. he told her we were going to europe and drove to the london bridge in arizona in lake

havasu city. and that was kind of cool. they put -- you'll be seeing stories every day i'm going to start putting stories on the air tonight and hopefully you will see them in the mornings about all these places. we're off and off route 66. i wanted to stand on a corner in winslow, arizona because my wife passed by and we missed that. new mexico. >> you're supposed to stay up and keep her up to help be a good navigator for her. >> well, look. you get on the highway and you get off the highway in new orleans pretty much. it's not a lot to navigate. but tomorrow will be fun. it's the alien museum where the aliens supposedly landed in roswell, new mexico. so i'm looking forward to that. >> i cannot wait to hear about your travels later on tonight.

baltimore ravens the purpose of the super bowl to decide whether the 49ers or your baltimore ravens will be crowned the champions of the nfl season but it's also the perfect time for a little friendly wager and "san francisco examiner" columnist melissa griffin is here with more on this year's mayoral bet. >> so frank i have a trivia question for you mr. sports guy. how many times have the 9ers lost the super bowl? >> lost? >> lost. >> zero. >> exactly! i knew you would know. so the 9ers have been to the dance five times and we have won every, single time. so the odds are in san

francisco's favor. even in las vegas, where we are projected to win by even more than a field goal. in fact, in las vegas, you can vote on anything from whether alisha keys will forget a word of the national anthem to how many times jack harbaugh will be shown on the screen. 140. that's the current bet. there's another wager that's important every year that we are in the super bowl and that is a wager between the mayors. so we have been five times and i went into the archives to see what historically those bets have been. so in 1982 when we beat the cincinnati bengals -- bagels -- bengals. i'm hungry. [ laughter ] >> mayor dianne feinstein bet a case of white wine from napa, a dozen crabs and dozen loafs of bread. she asked the cincinnati mayor to contribute to the the save the cable car fund if the 9ers won which we did.

cbssf.com/mornings. it's been years since the market has been on a roll like these days and here to talk about it, kcbs radio's financial reporter jason brooks. we are out of the gates in a big hurry in the month of january. >> not bad. corporate earnings have been better than expected some solid reports on the economy and improving job market, housing market is coming back. those are helping out. the s&p started over 1500 today for the first time since december 2007. getting more solid signals on the economy. the commerce department this morning reporting that durable goods orders in december rose 4.6%. large part of that on aircraft orders for boeing. aircraft orders are up 10% and even stripping out transportation the rise of 1.3% was much better than what analysts were expecting. we are getting more earnings today in yahoo reports its earnings after the closing bell and this will be a key record for the ceo, six months since she took over and yahoo stock is on the rise over that

time up 30%. analysts looking for revenues today of $1.21 billion from yahoo. let's see how the market started off this morning. the dow is up by 12 points. nasdaq gaining 7. s&p down a fraction. apple rebounding up 1.5% after dropping below in market value to exxon for the first time in a year on friday. frank, back to you. >> jason, we are getting back to that 14,000 mark where we were way back when, right? >> yeah. stocks have been very optimistic over the past year especially we have seen a nice move upward and getting past the "fiscal cliff" in december really helping out a bit as stocks continue to move. we'll see how earnings continue to go forward. >> 401ks thank you. kcbs radio's financial reporter jason brooks thank you. how about a check of weather now? i know being a raiders fan it's very difficult to sit in front of this helmet but for a week you have to join the team. >> they have earned it. hope it goes well in the super bowl. around the bay area chilly at times, we had a few scattered
